The stone spheres — or petrospheres — are among the most striking archaeological finds in Central America: near-perfectly round stones ranging from a few centimeters to over two meters across, with the largest weighing around 15 tons. Most were carved from gabbro, a rock related to basalt, while a few were shaped from limestone or sandstone.
They were made by the Diquís culture of southern Costa Rica, largely between AD 800 and 1500 — long before the Spanish arrived. Shaped by hand with stone tools, without metal chisels or the wheel, they are evidence of the skill of Costa Rica’s pre-Columbian peoples. In 2014, UNESCO added them to its World Heritage list as the “Precolumbian Chiefdom Settlements with Stone Spheres of the Diquís.”
Beyond their archaeological value, the spheres come wrapped in mystery. Some once claimed they were remnants of the lost city of Atlantis; others searched for geological explanations. Local folklore even held that ancient people had a potion that could soften stone. Archaeologists today read them more soberly — most likely as markers of status and power placed outside the homes of chiefs, though astronomical alignment and territorial marking have also been proposed.
The best place is the Finca 6 Archaeological Site near Palmar Sur in southern Costa Rica — the main UNESCO site, with more than fifty spheres and a small museum. You can also see them at the National Museum of Costa Rica in San José, in the plaza of Palmar Norte, and on Isla del Caño. If you’d like to include a visit, we can build it into a southern Costa Rica or Osa Peninsula itinerary.
