How Much Fishing Do You Want in Your Trip?
Not every visitor wants a dedicated fishing holiday, and not every fishing day has to be planned around a boat. We start by figuring out how much of your trip should actually revolve around fishing.

One Fishing Day
For travellers taking a broader Costa Rica vacation who want to include one good fishing day without planning the whole itinerary around it.

Fishing + Costa Rica
For travellers who want several fishing days combined with wildlife, rainforest, volcanoes, beach or other Costa Rica experiences.

Fishing-Focused Trip
For travellers who want accommodation, route and trip logistics chosen largely around fishing access.
What Kind of Fishing Are You Looking For?
Costa Rica has Pacific and Caribbean coastlines with different fishing styles, seasons and target species. None of this is guaranteed on any given day — fishing depends on season, sea conditions, currents and the day itself — but the patterns below are a reasonable starting point for planning.
Pacific Offshore Fishing
Trolling and live-bait fishing further out from the coast. Depending on the season and location, offshore trips may target sailfish, marlin, yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi (dorado). Billfish are typically caught and released; tuna and mahi-mahi are more commonly kept. Availability varies by month and region, so exact target species should be confirmed closer to your dates.
Pacific Inshore Fishing
Fishing closer to shore, around rocky points, river mouths and structure. Possible targets include roosterfish, snapper and jack species. Inshore trips are typically shorter and can suit travellers who want a half-day or full-day option without heading far offshore.
Caribbean Fishing
The Caribbean side offers a different style of fishing, including tarpon and snook around river mouths and coastal waters, particularly in the north around Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero. Access and logistics differ from the Pacific, so this is generally arranged as its own leg of the trip rather than a side excursion.
Best Fishing Regions in Costa Rica
Where you fish also shapes the rest of the trip — what your accommodation options look like, how far you need to transfer, and what non-fishing travellers can do nearby.
Quepos / Manuel Antonio & Central Pacific (Los Sueños, Jacó)
Style: One of Costa Rica’s main offshore departure points, with easy access to deep Pacific water. Targets: sailfish, marlin, dorado and tuna offshore, plus inshore options nearby. Season: offshore fishing runs largely year-round, with different species historically more productive at different times. Suits: travellers who want a serious offshore day without a long transfer. Nearby: Manuel Antonio National Park, beaches and hotels give non-fishing companions plenty to do. See our Central Pacific Coast guide.
Guanacaste / Papagayo
Style: Northern Pacific marinas with both offshore and inshore access. Targets: sailfish and marlin offshore, roosterfish and snapper inshore. Season: conditions vary through the year; specifics should be confirmed with the selected charter closer to your dates. Suits: travellers combining fishing with a beach-resort stay. Nearby: Guanacaste’s beach hotels and resorts work well for non-fishing companions. See our Guanacaste guide.
South Pacific / Golfito & Osa Peninsula
Style: Remote, deep offshore water close to shore, historically associated with serious offshore and billfish fishing. Targets: marlin, sailfish, tuna and other offshore species. Season: conditions and target species shift through the year; confirm with the charter for your travel window. Suits: anglers prioritising fishing quality over convenience, often as part of a fishing-focused trip. Nearby: Corcovado National Park and Drake Bay give non-fishing travellers a genuine wildlife and rainforest alternative. See our Southern Pacific & Osa Peninsula guide.
Caribbean Coast
Style: A different fishing environment from the Pacific — river mouths, canals and coastal waters, particularly around Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero in the north. Targets: tarpon and snook are the main draw. Season: tarpon fishing is often associated with certain months, but this should be confirmed with the operator rather than assumed. Suits: anglers specifically interested in tarpon or snook, generally as a dedicated leg of the trip. Nearby: Tortuguero’s canals and wildlife give non-fishing companions a strong alternative in the same region. See our Caribbean Coast guide.
Travelling With Someone Who Doesn’t Fish?
Not everyone in the group has to spend the day on the boat. If one traveller wants to fish while the other prefers wildlife, beach time, spa or another activity, we can arrange both sides of the day and keep the overall itinerary together.

Fishing Without Turning the Whole Trip Into a Fishing Holiday
Fishing can be one part of a broader Costa Rica itinerary rather than the entire trip. We generally plan this around route logic rather than adding fishing as an isolated extra.
If a client wants to fish from Quepos, it may make sense to combine those days with Manuel Antonio or continue south toward Osa rather than adding a long transfer purely for one charter. A trip built around Guanacaste can pair a fishing day with beach time at the same hotel. A trip that includes Arenal, rainforest or wildlife can add a Pacific fishing day near the coastal leg of the route, rather than routing the whole itinerary around it.
We can combine fishing with Arenal, Manuel Antonio, Osa, Guanacaste, wildlife and rainforest excursions, birdwatching, beach time and adventure activities — built around whichever combination makes sense for your route and travel dates.
Fishing Trips for Families
Fishing can work well for families, but whether it’s a good fit depends on the specifics rather than a blanket answer.
Suitability depends on your children’s ages, the length of the charter, sea conditions on the day, individual operator restrictions and the style of fishing planned. A shorter inshore trip is generally an easier introduction than a full day offshore. We can factor these details in when matching a charter and building the rest of the day around it — see our Family Vacations page for how we plan family trips more broadly.
When Is the Best Time for Fishing in Costa Rica?
There isn’t one single answer — the best period depends on the coast, the style of fishing and the species you’re after, as well as rainfall and sea conditions.
| Region / Fishing Type | General Pattern | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pacific Offshore (sailfish, marlin) | Fishable year-round; different months are historically stronger for different species | Confirm target species and expected conditions with the charter closer to your dates |
| Pacific Offshore (dorado, tuna) | Varies through the year with bait and current patterns | Less predictable by calendar month than billfish |
| Pacific Inshore (roosterfish, snapper) | Available across most of the year | Sea conditions on the day matter more than the season |
| Caribbean (tarpon, snook) | Certain months are historically associated with stronger tarpon runs | Confirm current-year timing directly with the operator |
These are general patterns, not guarantees. Conditions vary year to year, and the operator you fish with will have the most current read on what’s biting.
Choosing the Right Fishing Charter
Our role is to help match you to a charter that fits your trip, not to sell you a single fixed option.
The right charter depends on boat size and type, the number of anglers in your group, the style of fishing you want, your target species, trip duration, departure point, and practical factors like safety equipment and tackle on board. We take these into account when recommending a charter and building the transfer and logistics around it. We haven’t inspected every boat we can arrange access to, and we don’t call any operator “the best” without evidence to support it — our job is to match your trip to a suitable option and handle the surrounding logistics.
Responsible Sport Fishing
Billfish such as sailfish and marlin are commonly caught and released in Costa Rica, and most reputable offshore operators follow catch-and-release practices for these species. Costa Rica also has its own fishing regulations and licensing requirements that apply to sport fishing operators. When we arrange a charter, we work with operators who fish within these norms; exact conservation practices and current regulations should be confirmed with the specific operator for your trip.
What CRS Tours Can Arrange
Depending on your trip and the charter selected, we may arrange:
Fishing charter
Hotel or lodge
Airport transfer
Private hotel-to-hotel transfers
Domestic logistics
Guides
Wildlife activities
Adventure activities
Beach stays & non-fishing activities
Exact charter inclusions — tackle, bait, meals, drinks, fishing licence, fuel — depend on the selected supplier and will be detailed clearly in your proposal. We don’t assume inclusions that haven’t been confirmed for your specific charter.
Fishing Trip Ideas
These are examples of how a trip could be structured, not fixed CRS packages or set itineraries. Every trip is built around your dates, group and priorities.
Fishing Day During a Costa Rica Vacation
One charter incorporated into a wider tailor-made trip, alongside destinations like Manuel Antonio, Guanacaste or Arenal.
Pacific Fishing + Wildlife
Fishing days combined with Manuel Antonio and/or the Osa Peninsula for wildlife and rainforest time.
Fishing + Arenal + Beach
A broader Costa Rica vacation with selected fishing days built around a volcano, rainforest and beach route.
Pricing
Charter pricing depends on location, boat, duration, date, group size and inclusions, so we don’t publish fixed rates. Once we know what you’re looking for, we’ll put together a quote based on current supplier pricing for your dates.
Why Plan Your Costa Rica Fishing Trip With CRS Tours?
Local knowledge
We are based in Costa Rica, not overseas. We know the drive times between the marinas and the rest of the country, which roads are a problem in the wet season, and which hotels actually work for an early charter departure.
Tailor-made, not a fixed package
We do not sell one fishing package to everybody. The route follows how much fishing you want, your dates and what the rest of your group wants to do.
Charter matched to your trip
We match the boat, departure point and style of fishing to your group and target species, and we tell you what the charter can realistically target rather than promising a catch.
The whole trip as one
Accommodation, private transfers, domestic logistics, charter, guides and non-fishing activities arranged as a single itinerary, with one point of contact.
Support on the ground
You have a Costa Rican company behind the trip while you are here, not a call centre in another time zone.

Costa Rica Fishing — Frequently Asked Questions
Is Costa Rica good for sport fishing?
Yes. Costa Rica has a Pacific coast with offshore access to sailfish, marlin, tuna and mahi-mahi, inshore fishing for roosterfish and snapper, and a Caribbean coast known for tarpon and snook. Which coast and style suits you depends on your dates, your target species and how much of the trip you want to spend fishing.
What fish can I catch in Costa Rica?
Offshore on the Pacific, charters typically target sailfish, marlin, yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi (dorado). Inshore targets include roosterfish, snapper and jacks. On the Caribbean side, tarpon and snook are the main draw around Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero. Nothing is guaranteed on any given day, so we describe what a charter can realistically target rather than what you will catch.
When is the best time for fishing in Costa Rica?
There is no single answer. Pacific offshore fishing is possible year-round, with different months historically stronger for different species. Inshore fishing is available across most of the year and depends more on sea conditions on the day. Caribbean tarpon fishing is associated with certain months, which should be confirmed with the operator for the current year. Tell us your species and dates and we will tell you which window fits.
Where are the best places to fish in Costa Rica?
The main departure points are Quepos and the Central Pacific (Los Sueños, Jacó), Guanacaste and the Papagayo area, the South Pacific around Golfito and the Osa Peninsula, and the northern Caribbean around Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero. Each shapes the rest of the trip differently, so we choose the region together with the route and the accommodation.
Can I include one fishing day in a wider Costa Rica vacation?
Yes, and this is one of the most common requests. We add a Pacific fishing day near the coastal leg of your route, for example from Quepos alongside Manuel Antonio, or from Guanacaste at the same hotel as your beach stay, rather than routing the whole itinerary around one charter.
Can you plan a trip mainly around fishing?
Yes. For fishing-focused trips we choose accommodation, route and logistics largely around fishing access, including the number of fishing days, the departure point and the transfers between them.
What does a fishing charter include?
It depends on the operator. Tackle, bait, meals, drinks, fishing licence and fuel vary by supplier, so we confirm the exact inclusions for the charter we propose and detail them clearly in your quote rather than assuming them.
Is fishing in Costa Rica suitable for children?
It can be, depending on the children's ages, the length of the charter, sea conditions on the day and the operator's own restrictions. A shorter inshore trip is generally an easier introduction than a full day offshore. Tell us who is travelling and we will factor that in.
What can the rest of my group do while I fish?
Wildlife excursions, beach time, spa, rainforest walks, kayaking, ziplining or simply a quiet day at the hotel. We arrange both sides of the day and keep the overall itinerary together.
Is sport fishing in Costa Rica catch and release?
Billfish such as sailfish and marlin are commonly caught and released, and most reputable offshore operators follow catch-and-release practices for these species. Tuna and mahi-mahi are more often kept. Current regulations and each operator's practices should be confirmed for your specific trip.
How much does a fishing trip in Costa Rica cost?
Charter pricing depends on location, boat, duration, date, group size and inclusions, so we do not publish fixed rates. Once we know what you are looking for, we put together a quote based on current supplier pricing for your dates.
Can travel agents and tour operators request fishing programmes?
Yes. CRS Tours works with agents and operators as a Costa Rican destination management company, arranging private FIT itineraries with fishing days, fishing-focused programmes and fishing-and-wildlife combinations with ground handling in-house.
