What an Active Costa Rica Trip Can Include
A few examples of activities we combine into real itineraries:
How Active Do You Want Your Trip to Be?
Tell us how active you want your Costa Rica trip to be, and we will combine the right activities, destinations, wildlife and downtime into a realistic itinerary. Most trips end up somewhere between these three levels rather than fitting neatly into one.
Easy Active
Hanging bridges, easier rainforest and volcano walks, gentle kayaking, wildlife walks and waterfall visits. For travellers who want to be active without it feeling physically demanding.
Active
Rafting, ziplining, longer hikes, canyoning, surfing and more active kayaking, with a few activity days back to back.
More Challenging
Longer or steeper hikes, more intensive rafting where the river allows it, and multi-hour excursions across several demanding days.
Adventure Does Not Mean Every Day
A good adventure itinerary does not need a major activity every day. We normally combine active days with wildlife, hot springs, easier nature experiences or beach time, so the trip stays enjoyable rather than feeling like a schedule of back-to-back excursions.

Best Regions for an Active Costa Rica Trip
The right activities depend on the region, so this is usually where we start when building an active itinerary. We handle the transfers between destinations as part of the trip, so the logistics stay simple.
Arenal / La Fortuna
Hiking trails around the volcano, rafting on nearby rivers, canyoning, ziplining, hanging bridges, and hot springs to recover in the evening. Works well as an activity base for the first days of a trip. More on Arenal.
Monteverde
Cloud forest hiking, canopy tours and hanging bridges through misty forest at altitude. A good pairing with Arenal for travellers who want two different active environments in one trip. More on Monteverde.
Rincón de la Vieja
Volcanic landscapes, waterfalls and hiking trails in this Guanacaste national park, often combined with a beach stay nearby. Good for travellers who want hiking without the crowds of Arenal.
Manuel Antonio / Central Pacific
Kayaking, coastal hikes and wildlife-rich trails alongside beach time. A good way to slow the pace after a few active days inland. More on Manuel Antonio.
Guanacaste / Nicoya Peninsula
Surfing and coastal activities alongside inland hiking, suited to travellers who want an active trip that still includes real beach time. More on Guanacaste.
Activities We Build Into Itineraries
We do not sell single excursions in isolation — these are the activities we most often combine into a wider Costa Rica itinerary.
Hiking
Arenal, Monteverde, Rincón de la Vieja. Easy to multi-hour trails, suits most fitness levels, combines well with wildlife walks.
Rafting
Sarapiquí, Pacuare and Reventazón rivers around Turrialba. Difficulty varies by river and season. Works best as one focused day.
Ziplining & Canopy
Arenal and Monteverde. A short, high-energy addition rather than a full day — pairs well with a hike the same morning.
Kayaking & Canoeing
Calmer rivers and coastal spots near Manuel Antonio and the Caribbean coast. Easy to build in on a lower-intensity day.
Canyoning
Arenal area. More physically demanding — suits travellers already comfortable with rafting or longer hikes.
Hanging Bridges
Arenal and Monteverde. A gentle way to see the rainforest canopy that works for almost any traveller.
Surfing
Guanacaste and the Nicoya Peninsula. Best combined with beach days rather than inland activity days.
Wildlife Walks
Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, Osa Peninsula. Low intensity — a good rest-day activity between bigger excursions.
Adventure Trips for Families
Activities can be adjusted for ages, confidence, physical ability and interests — from gentle hanging bridge walks and wildlife walks for younger children to rafting or ziplining for teens and adults. Age, height, weight and health restrictions vary by operator and activity, so we check what is realistic for your family before building the itinerary. See our Family Vacations itineraries for more on planning an active trip with children.

Adventure and Wildlife Together
Many travellers do not want a purely active holiday. We regularly combine rafting, hiking or ziplining with wildlife-watching, birdwatching, rainforest walks and beach time, so the trip has variety rather than being built around one type of activity. See our Nature & Wildlife itineraries for combinations that lean more toward wildlife.

Know Before You Book
- Activity restrictions vary by operator, and age, height, weight, health or swimming requirements may apply depending on the activity.
- Weather and river conditions can affect whether an activity runs on a given day.
- Rafting difficulty varies by river and by season — conditions in dry season and green season are not the same.
- Not every activity suits every traveller, and that is fine — a good itinerary works around that rather than forcing it in.
- Routing matters. Some activities work far better from specific destinations, so it is worth planning the route around the activities that matter most to you.
- Sometimes fewer activities and more time in one place makes for a better trip than fitting everything in.
