Who Needs a Visa to Enter Costa Rica in 2025?

Costa Rica groups countries into four categories, depending on diplomatic relations and entry policies. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Group 1 – No Visa Required (Stay up to 90 Days)

Citizens from the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, EU countries, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan do not need a visa. Just bring a valid passport and a return or onward ticket.

Passport must be valid for at least 1 day upon entry.
Allowed stay: Up to 90 days as a tourist.

Group 2 – No Visa Required (Stay up to 30 Days)

Includes countries like Brazil, South Africa, Ecuador, and Peru.

Passport must be valid for at least 3 months upon entry.
Stay can be extended to 90 days upon request at immigration.

Group 3 – Visa Required via Costa Rican Consulate
