This sample Costa Rica 7-day itinerary follows the classic first-timer route and is easy to tailor to your pace and budget.

Day 1 — Arrive in San José
Land at San José (SJO), meet your driver and settle in near the city or airport. Keep the first evening relaxed — a good night’s sleep sets you up for an early start. If you arrive early, a short visit to the Central Market or a coffee tour in the surrounding highlands is an easy introduction.
Day 2 — San José to La Fortuna & Arenal
Travel roughly 3–3.5 hours north to La Fortuna, the gateway to the iconic cone-shaped Arenal Volcano. Along the way you pass rolling farmland and cloud-draped hills. Arrive in time to relax in one of the area’s natural hot springs, warmed by the volcano itself.
Day 3 — Arenal: bridges, waterfall & hot springs
A full day around Arenal. Walk the hanging bridges through primary rainforest for canopy-level wildlife spotting, hike to the base of the 70-metre La Fortuna waterfall, and finish with another soak in the springs. Birdlife here is superb — keep an eye out for toucans and oropendolas.
Day 4 — Arenal to Monteverde
A scenic half-day transfer (often via a boat across Lake Arenal) brings you up into the Monteverde cloud forest. The change is dramatic: cooler air, moss-covered trees and clouds drifting between the branches. Spend the afternoon acclimatising in the mountain village of Santa Elena.
Day 5 — Monteverde cloud forest
Explore the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve on foot, cross the sky bridges, or fly over the canopy on a zipline. This is one of the best places in the country to look for the resplendent quetzal and hundreds of other bird species. Read our full guide to Monteverde for more.
Day 6 — To the Pacific coast
Descend from the mountains to the Pacific and the beach town of Manuel Antonio (around 4–5 hours). Trade the cloud forest chill for warm sand and palm-fringed coves. Arrive in time for sunset over the ocean.
Day 7 — Manuel Antonio National Park & departure
Spend your final morning in Manuel Antonio National Park, where rainforest trails lead to white-sand beaches and you’ll likely see sloths, monkeys and iguanas. Depending on your flight, transfer back to San José (about 2.5–3 hours) for departure.
Is 7 days enough for Costa Rica?

Best time to do this route
This itinerary works year-round. The dry season (December–April) offers the most reliable sunshine, while the green season (May–November) brings lush landscapes, fewer crowds and lower prices. Wildlife is excellent in every season.
