After a first night in Alajuela you fly to Drake Bay on the wild Osa Peninsula and spend three days between land and sea: hiking Corcovado National Park, one of the most biodiverse places on earth, and diving or snorkelling around Caño Island, where reef sharks, rays and turtles are regulars. You finish at Manuel Antonio, whose small national park is one of the surest places in the country to see sloths and monkeys, with beaches right next door.
